What is Tawheed? The absolute oneness of God — the foundation of Islam. To worship Him alone frees the heart from every lesser master.
لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ
There is no god but He.
— Quran 2:255
The Heart of It All
Tawheed — the absolute oneness of God — is the single idea from which all of Islam flows. God is one, without partner, without parts, without equal. He alone creates, sustains and deserves worship. Everything else in the faith is, in a sense, a commentary on this one truth.
More Than Counting
Tawheed is not merely the belief that God is numerically one. It is the conviction that He is unique in His being, His authority and His right to be worshipped — that nothing in creation shares His nature or may take His place in the heart. To split that devotion is the one thing Islam calls true loss.
Freedom From False Gods
Practically, tawheed liberates. The person who worships only God is freed from worshipping money, status, fear, desire or the opinions of others. With one Master, all the lesser masters lose their grip. This is the dignity at the core of Islam.
Get this one truth right, and everything else in life quietly falls into its proper place.
