وَلَهُنَّ مِثْلُ ٱلَّذِى عَلَيْهِنَّ بِٱلْمَعْرُوفِ

What Islam Actually Gave
In the 7th century, Islam granted women the right to own property, to inherit, to keep their own earnings, to consent to marriage, to seek divorce, and to be educated — rights Western women would not secure for over a thousand years. Female scholars taught hadith and law in the earliest generations.
Culture Is Not the Quran
Where women are mistreated in Muslim societies, the cause is almost always local culture, poverty or politics — not the religion. Many harmful customs directly contradict Islamic teaching. The honest critic must separate what some Muslims do from what Islam itself commands.
Ask the Women
Hundreds of millions of Muslim women — scholars, doctors, mothers, leaders — describe their faith as a source of dignity, not chains. Their voices, not stereotypes, are the fairest test of the question. Many converts to Islam, in fact, are women.
Before answering whether Islam frees or oppresses women, it is worth listening to the women who have actually walked through its door.
