What Is Hell in Islam?
إِنَّ رَحْمَتِى سَبَقَتْ غَضَبِى

قُلْ يَٰعِبَادِىَ ٱلَّذِينَ أَسْرَفُوا۟ عَلَىٰٓ أَنفُسِهِمْ لَا تَقْنَطُوا۟ مِن رَّحْمَةِ ٱللَّهِ
Say: O My servants who have wronged themselves, do not despair of God's mercy.

Justice, Not Cruelty
Hell — Jahannam — is real in Islam, a consequence for those who knowingly reject truth and persist in injustice and cruelty. It is the answer to a universe in which the tyrant must not get away with it forever. It exists because justice must be real for goodness to mean anything.
Mercy Comes First
Yet God describes His mercy as preceding His wrath. He does not delight in punishment; the Quran says He has 'prescribed mercy upon Himself' (6:54). No one is sent to Hell by surprise, and the smallest sincere turn toward God is met with open arms.
A Warning, Out of Love
Islam speaks of Hell the way a loving parent warns a child away from fire — not to frighten for its own sake, but to save. The very fact that you have heard the warning, while there is still time, is itself an act of mercy toward you.
Hell exists in Islam so that justice is not a myth — but mercy is mentioned first, and far more often, and reaches anyone who turns.
