Does God Actually Love Us?

وَهُوَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ٱلْوَدُودُ

And He is the Forgiving, the Loving. (Quran 85:14)

Read

Does God love us in Islam? Yes — Al-Wadud, the Loving, is one of His names. More merciful than a mother, He runs toward whoever takes one step toward Him.

إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلتَّوَّٰبِينَ وَيُحِبُّ ٱلْمُتَطَهِّرِينَ

Indeed, God loves those who turn to Him and those who purify themselves.

— Quran 2:222

One of His Names

Among the ninety-nine names of God is Al-Wadud — the Loving. This is not love as a vague sentiment but as one of His very attributes. The Quran repeatedly states whom God loves: the just, the patient, the generous, those who turn back to Him again and again.

More Than a Mother

The Prophet ﷺ once watched a mother frantically searching for her lost child, then clutching the baby to her chest, and told his companions that God is more merciful to His servants than that mother is to her child. It is among the most tender images in all of scripture.

Love That Pursues You

In a sacred narration, God says that whoever draws near to Him by a handspan, He draws near by an arm's length; whoever comes walking, He comes running. This is not a distant deity waiting to be appeased, but a Lord who moves toward the one who takes a single step home.

You do not have to climb to God exhausted — He is already moving toward you faster than you can walk.
