What Is the One Sin God Cannot Forgive?
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَا يَغْفِرُ أَن يُشْرَكَ بِهِۦ وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ
God does not forgive associating partners with Him, but forgives anything less than that. (Quran 4:48)

What is the one sin God cannot forgive? Dying in shirk — knowingly worshipping other than God. Yet even that is wiped away the moment a person turns back.
وَيَغْفِرُ مَا دُونَ ذَٰلِكَ لِمَن يَشَآءُ
And He forgives what is less than that for whom He wills.

The One Exception
The Quran says God may forgive any sin — except dying having knowingly set up a rival to Him, called shirk. Everything else, no matter how great, is within reach of His mercy. There is essentially one unforgivable choice, and it concerns the very foundation of reality: Who is your God?
Why This One
Shirk is not unforgivable because God is fragile, but because it is the rejection of truth itself — refusing the One who gives you every breath, and handing your devotion to what cannot create, hear, or save. To die still refusing this is to refuse the only door to mercy.
The Door Stays Open
Crucially, even shirk is forgiven the moment a person turns from it. Many of the Prophet's ﷺ companions had worshipped idols their whole lives, then embraced tawheed and were forgiven completely. The 'unforgivable' sin is unforgivable only if you carry it, unrepented, to the grave.
There is only one sin God will not forgive — and the very fact that you can still turn from it means it is not yet yours.
