Is God Merciful or Just — or Both?
وَرَبُّكَ ٱلْغَفُورُ ذُو ٱلرَّحْمَةِ
And your Lord is the Forgiving, full of mercy. (Quran 18:58)

Is God merciful or just in Islam? Both, perfectly and at once — His justice guarantees no wrong is ignored, while His mercy always leans toward the one who turns.
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يَأْمُرُ بِٱلْعَدْلِ وَٱلْإِحْسَٰنِ
Indeed, God commands justice and excellence.

Not a Contradiction
We often imagine mercy and justice as opposites — one forgives, the other punishes. In Islam they are not rivals but two attributes of the same perfect God. He is Al-Adl, the Just, and Ar-Rahman, the Merciful, fully and at once, without either canceling the other.
Justice for the Wronged
A god who only forgave, never judged, would be no comfort to the oppressed — the murderer and the murdered cannot share the same fate. God's justice guarantees that no wrong is ignored and no victim forgotten. Mercy without justice would be indifference.
Mercy Leads the Way
And yet God tells us His mercy outweighs His wrath, that He forgives vastly and punishes sparingly, that He gives many chances before any reckoning. He is perfectly just — but He leans, always, toward mercy for the one who turns to Him.
God is just enough that evil will never have the last word, and merciful enough that you never have to.
