What Is the Sunnah and Why Does It Matter?
لَّقَدْ كَانَ لَكُمْ فِى رَسُولِ ٱللَّهِ أُسْوَةٌ حَسَنَةٌ
Indeed, in the Messenger of God you have an excellent example. (Quran 33:21)

What is the Sunnah in Islam? The Prophet's ﷺ example — his words and deeds preserved in hadith — that turns the Quran's message into a livable way of life.
وَمَآ ءَاتَىٰكُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ فَخُذُوهُ
Whatever the Messenger gives you, take it.
— Quran 59:7
The Quran in Action
The Sunnah is the recorded example of the Prophet ﷺ — his words, actions and approvals. If the Quran is the message, the Sunnah is the demonstration. When Aisha was asked about his character, she replied simply: 'His character was the Quran.' He lived what was revealed.
Detail and Guidance
The Quran commands prayer, but the Sunnah shows how to pray. It teaches not only worship but how to eat, greet, trade, parent, forgive and grieve. It turns abstract principles into a livable way of life, preserved through carefully verified narrations called hadith.
A Mercy of Specifics
Following the Sunnah is not slavish imitation but love expressed through example. In its smallest details — smiling at others, removing harm from a path, speaking gently — the believer finds a thousand daily ways to draw near to God by walking, lightly, in the Prophet's footsteps.
The Quran tells us what God wants; the Sunnah shows us what it looks like when a human being truly lives it.
