What Is the Soul?
وَيَسْـَٔلُونَكَ عَنِ ٱلرُّوحِ ۖ قُلِ ٱلرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّى
They ask you about the soul. Say: the soul is from the command of my Lord. (Quran 17:85)

What is the soul in Islam? The ruh — a breath from God, sacred and mysterious, the true self that survives death and is the real object of worship.
وَنَفَخْتُ فِيهِ مِن رُّوحِى
And I breathed into him of My spirit.

The Breath of God
Islam teaches that the human being is more than chemistry. When God formed Adam, He breathed into him a soul — the ruh — a reality from the unseen world. This is why a human life is sacred, why conscience exists, and why the body alone can never explain the ache for meaning.
A Deliberate Mystery
When the Prophet ﷺ was asked about the soul, the answer that came was that it belongs to the command of God. Islam is honest here: the soul is not fully knowable. We can study the brain endlessly and still not find the one who is doing the studying.
What It Is For
The soul is the part of you that survives death, that will be questioned, that can be cleansed or corrupted. The whole purpose of worship, in Islam, is the polishing of this inner self — so that it returns to its Lord pure, the way it first arrived.
You are not a body that happens to think; you are a soul that has been lent a body for a while.
